This page is designed just for your reading group. We will be using these activities as we read The Boxcar Children together.
Activity One: The Boxcar
Draw a picture of the inside of the boxcar. Then write a descriptive paragraph telling about what you drew.
Activity Two: Making do with what you have
Boxcar Chart
Keep a list of all the things the boxcar children used to substitute for real items and places. An example would be using a cool spot behind a rock as a refrigerator. Once you have a few examples from the book then do this:Think of an item you use every day. Then think of something from nature or that you might find lying around that could be used as that item. Draw a picture of yourself using this new thing, or draw a picture of the new tool that you have made.

Activity Four: Real World Connections
One of the big events in the history of Missouri includes the arrival of orphan trains from New York. Watch this video to learn more about that event in history.
Activity Five: Write a letter to Ma
Imagine you were one of the orphans on that train from New York. Write a friendly letter to your mother back in New York telling her about your life here in Missouri. You may want to read some of these stories from actual train riders to help you with ideas for this activity.
